What Comprises a Good Gun Cleaning Kit

Being a firearm enthusiast has  its own responsibilities and one of which is owning a good gun cleaning kit. A good kit should have  all the things needed to provide your gun the utmost care it deserves. A basic set will typically have  : a bottle of solvent, a bottle of lubricating oil, a rod, a jag, a patch holder and some patches. In most cases, you have to purchase a bore cleaning brush separately because they come in different sizes for various calibers of guns.

If you only need basic cleaning , your brush should be made of bronze instead of plastic or stainless steel. If you want to switch to a plastic bore brush, you have to buy  a super powerful solvent that can dissolve copper fouling. Bronze brushes will be dissolved by such solvents so plastic is highly advisable. Gun cleaning kits are readily available and there are many brands to choose from. You can actually get away with a $10 kit.

For the cleaners and lubricants, find products  that are formulated with the highest quality of ingredients that have been tested to withstand  extreme weather conditions. You’ll never know where your shooting or hunting escapade will lead you so it’s good to know that your good old firearm can handle it if you needed it to. As a shooter or hunter, you want to have the assurance that your gun will work precisely time after time. You can achieve this by learning to pay meticulous attention to each detail.

What other gun cleaning supplies you will need aside from the basic kit? It will be nice if you have an old toothbrush, some cotton swabs, pipe cleaners and cleaning rags in your kit. Some of them are simply nice to come in handy while some are close to being essential. Some people hate using cotton swabs because they tend to leave lint behind but if you’re extra careful, they work pretty well. For pipe cleaners, you need to look for one that is made of cotton and is designed to clean and reach small awkward spaces.

Just a reminder, everytime you do your cleaning, make sure you use several layers of newspapers laid out on a large plastic garbage sack. This will keep any dripped or spilled solvent from damaging your table or furniture.

Use a Shooting Bench when You Sight in Your Rifle Scope

The portable shooting bench is just about the most useful accessory for the avid shooter there is! Using a shooting bench at a rifle range is wonderful, but there are so many different times that a well designed shooting bench is useful .

At my local rifle range, most of the folks on the 600 yard range lie in the prone position. which is good for accuracy. It is much better, though, to be able to sit on a clean bench and sight in on the target at ease. Also, I have a friend with some ranch land out west; he does most of his shooting where there is no one around, and is happy to be able to set up a portable shooting bench wherever he needs to.

It is useful to be able to have one that you can just put in the back of your ATV for when you can really use it. Combined with a good rifle rest or set of sand bags for your rifle, a portable shooting bench is useful for all sorts of things, like:

  • Sighting in a scope for different ammo at a specific distance.
  • Bring it on a drive to a vacant part of the farm and practice shooting.
  • Put it on your back porch to shoot rodents.
  • Teach kids to shoot before they are able to hold a rifle standing up.
  • Bring it to your favorite hunting location so you can relax and hunt in comfort.

When you get your portable shooting bench ready to go, there are a few other things you want to make sure you bring to enjoy your time at the range. For example:

  • Ammo and extra magazines.
  • Small toolkit with screwdrivers, adjustable wrench, and both metric and standard Allen wrenches.
  • Rifle cleaning kit with cleaner, oil, and patches.
  • Targets, target stand, and staple gun.
  • Spotting scope, binoculars, range finder.
  • Appropriate clothes for the weather, insect repellent, and sunscreen.

Go to your special shooting place with a good portable shooting bench, your rifles, a few buddies, and have a wonderful time!

Guns stop crime

John Lott, the nation’s premier expert on guns and crime, has offered more proof that more guns equal less crime. Writing at the Big Government website, Mr. Lott offers a counterintuitive truth: “President Obama surely didn’t intend it, but he deserves some credit for last year’s 7.4 percent drop in murder rates. His election caused gun sales to soar, and crime rates to plummet.” Gun sales soared because Americans rightly feared the leftist president would try to severely restrict the right to own firearms, particularly handguns. Liberals fear guns despite evidence demonstrating that higher rates of gun ownership mean lower rates of crime.
